Commento: Giusto pareggio per una partita dalle due facce che ha visto il primo tempo di marca spiccatamente "Reds" ed un secondo tempo giocato ai ritmi decisi dagli "Hoops".
De Canio lascia in panchina Vine e propone l’inedito trio d’attacco Agyemag-Blackstock-Balanta, forse per risparmiare Rowan per la partita di domenica contro lo Stoke City.
Purtoppo, però, i tre colored soffrono la mancanza di una seconda punta con la tecnica e la facilità di corsa come è Vine e non riescono quindi a dare la giusta pericolosità al nostro attacco.
Pronti-via e subito Buzsaky cerca di dare la svolta all’incontro tagliando l’area avversaria con due cross consecutivi. Purtoppo entrambi i cross non vengono sfruttati dalle punte.
Ma è solo un fuoco di paglia perchè, di li a poco, salgono in cattedra i centrocampisti del Barnsley che bloccano i Rangers nella loro metà campo ed iniziano a mulinare gioco per Macken e Ferenczi.
La formazione d’attacco schierata da De Canio riesce a reggere il colpo ma raramente riesce a portare al tiro le punte. Ci provano Balanta e Blackstock a cavallo del 5′ minuto, ma poi per rivedere gli R’s al tiro bisogna aspettare la mezzora (Leigertwood).
Al 30′ l’occasione migliore per il Barnsley: cross di Jamal Campbell-Ryce, colpo di testa di Istvan Ferenczi e palla sulla traversa.
Successivamente si susseguono vari rovesciamenti di fronte ma nessun portiere corre seri rischi.
Nel secondo tempo le squadre si ripresentano con lo stesso 11 iniziale, ma il pallino del gioco passa stabilmente in mano ai Rangers che aggrediscono subito l’avversario e vanno al tiro con Rowlands, Blackstock e Balanta in meno di due minuti. Ed è proprio sui piedi di Balanta che al 47′ capita l’occasione migliore, quando calcia di destro a colpo sicuro verso la porta sguarnita. Purtoppo per Balanta e per noi tifosi, il difensore Nyatanga riesce ad intervenire e a bloccare il tiro prima che varchi la linea di porta.
Successivamente, con Buzsaky, Ephraim (entrato al 60′ per Balanta) e Rowlands, i Rangers hanno esercitato una costante pressione sui Reds, grazie al ritrovato controllo del centrocampo e all’accuratezza dei calci piazzati. Purtoppo, però, il lavoro del centrocampo non è stato finalizzato.
Poi sono iniziati i cambi. Le squadra hanno assunto un assetto più guardingo e prudente ed è parso chiaro che il risultato di 0-0 in fondo non dispiacesse a nessuno.
