All’andata ci fu uno spettacolo meraviglioso, con lo United a portarsi sul 3-0 alla fine del primo tempo, ma con il Wednesday (ancora con Laws in panchina) a reagire e a sfiorare il clamoroso pareggio.
Un punto sopra lo Sheffield Wednesday c’è il Crystal Palace, reduce dal brutto ko di sabato scorso e chiamato ad un risveglio, anche perché la zona pericolosa è davvero molto vicina: le Eagles affrontano in trasferta un Derby County tranquillo e alla ricerca di un pareggio che consentirebbe la matematica salvezza. L’altalenante Scunthorpe si gioca invece quasi il tutto per tutto affrontando il Bristol City: gli Irons si erano risollevati con qualche grande risultato, ma poi hanno incappato tre sconfitte consecutive e hanno visto di nuovo la propria posizione in serio pericolo e quindi devono centrare i tre punti contro i Robins.
Respira dopo la vittoria di sabato scorso ma rimane in zona pericolosissima il Watford, che ha un calendario non semplice e affronta una trasferta difficilissima in casa del Leicester, che vuole confermare il proprio quinto posto e magari ottenere anche la matematica qualificazione ai playoff, non certo un cattivo piazzamento per una squadra neopromossa: le Foxes sarebbero ai playoff qualora vincessero e contemporaneamente il Blackpool perdesse in casa contro il Nottingham Forest e il Middlesbrough non andasse oltre alla vittoria in casa del West Bromwich. Per il Blackpool il match di sabato è fondamentale per attaccare il sesto posto dello Swansea City, che è in grande difficoltà e deve risalire con un successo contro il Barnsley, piuttosto in calo in questo finale di stagione. Oltre il Leicester, anche il Cardiff City potrebbe ottenere l’accesso matematico ai playoff in caso di vittoria sul QPR, oppure anche in caso di pareggio e di contemporanea mancata vittoria del Blackpool o ancora in caso di sconfitta e di contemporanei ko del Blackpool e mancata vittoria del Middlesbrough. La giornata si chiuderà con il Monday Night di Home Park, dove il Newcastle potrebbe arrivare già campione della Championship in caso di mancata vittoria del WBA nel match di sabato: qualora i Baggies invece riuscissero a vincere, ai Magpies basterebbe un punto per avere in mano matematicamente il primo posto. Allo stesso tempo il Plymouth penultimo potrebbe esser retrocesso qualora i risultati del weekend andassero contro: un ko potrebbe portare la retrocessione matematica in caso di risultato positivo dello Scunthorpe e di vittoria di uno tra Sheffield Wednesday e Crystal Palace, ma anche un pareggio potrebbe costare la retrocessione in caso di vittorie di Scunthorpe e Crystal Palace e risultato positivo del Watford.
